Chapter 13: Personal Health Care
Lesson 1 โ Skin, Hair & Nail Care
Your skin is the body's largest organ โ a protective barrier against bacteria, UV radiation, and injury. Good hygiene preserves this barrier and prevents infection.
Acne is caused by excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria clogging pores โ not dirt. Hormones during puberty increase oil production. Gentle cleansing and non-comedogenic products help manage it.
Lesson 2 โ Dental & Eye Care
Oral health affects your whole body โ gum disease is linked to heart disease and diabetes. Eyes are equally important: regular exams catch problems early.
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for 2 minutes
- Floss once daily to remove plaque between teeth
- Dentist visits every 6 months for cleaning and exam
- Eye exams every 1โ2 years; sooner if vision changes
- Screen time breaks โ 20-20-20 rule: every 20 min, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds
Lesson 3 โ Healthcare & Checkups
Preventive care catches health problems before they become serious. Regular checkups, screenings, and vaccinations are cornerstones of good health maintenance.
A yearly checkup with your healthcare provider includes height/weight, blood pressure, vision/hearing screening, and immunization review. It's your chance to ask questions about your health.
- Keep an updated health record: vaccinations, allergies, medications
- Know your family health history โ many conditions are hereditary
- Be honest with your provider โ confidentiality laws protect teens
- Follow through on referrals to specialists
Lesson 4 โ Consumer Health & Health Products
Being a smart health consumer means critically evaluating products, services, and information before making decisions. Misinformation is widespread โ especially online.
